Principles of Effective Leadership

Anyone can be a leader. There are no prerequisites for leadership. Even if you’re not managing a team, you may step into a leadership role from time to time – when caring for a child, spearheading a project, or hosting a meeting. That’s why it’s beneficial for everyone to learn the principles of effective leadership.

Being an effective leader means being able to work alongside your team members to navigate the environmental stresses and push through them together. No matter if your team consists of employees, a spouse, children, or fellow committee members you’ll need to understand how to connect and communicate with your team in positive and inspiring ways. Effective communication is the cornerstone of leadership development, a necessity in any endeavor to connect with your team in a meaningful way so that everyone can grow and thrive.

Let’s examine together some traits of effective leaders:

  • They create an inspiring vision of the future.
  • They motivate and inspire people to engage with that vision.
  • They properly manage the execution of the vision.
  • They coach and build a harmonious team.
  • They are always learning.
  • Finally, they invest in themselves and their team.

While this is in no way an exhaustive list of key traits or principles of effective leadership, we can say without a doubt that these six principles, when demonstrated in sincerity, greatly improve employee engagement, team morale, and likelihood of project completion.

A great way to demonstrate these traits from a place of sincerity is to know your leadership style through the Maxwell DISC Assessment. Knowing whether your style is Dominant, Influencing, Steady, or Compliant will assist you in effectively communicating the vision and inspiring people to go where you lead them.
